It's the most winning political party in Belize's history, legendary for its election day mobilization, and well known for its abundance of financial and human resources, but yesterday the PUP was crushed in municipal elections. While a modest upset might have been projected, it is a defeat so complete that not even the UDP really expected it.
At the end the final tall is this: of the 67 seats being contested in 9 towns and cities countrywide, the UDP won 64, while the PUP won just 3. The UDP will control all seats in Corozal, Orange Walk, Belize City, Cayo, Dangriga and San Pedro. In Benque, the UDP won 6 of 7 seats, and lost the seventh by only one vote. And the other split council is in Punta Gorda, has created a municipal first: there will be a PUP mayor with a majority of UDP councilors. PUP Mayor Carlos "Obeah" Galvez will lead a council with one other PUP councilor and 5 UDP councilors.
