It was like a general elections atmosphere yesterday in Corozal Town for the most fiercely contested convention of the season...but in the end, PUP co-deputy leader Vildo Marin managed to hold on to his division.
A total of 1,341 voters came out in Corozal Bay, and 759 voted for Marin, while 196 fewer, 563 voted for upstart challenger, Freddy Ewens. Of course, for a deputy leader of a mass party, mobilizing only 16% of the 4800 registered voters for a hot convention is still less than optimal.
The only other contested convention was in Cayo West where Kendall Mendez held on to defeat challenger Armando Chulin handily, 725 to 397 votes. Chulin was recently one of only three PUP town council candidates countrywide to be elected.
The other contested convention was expected to be held in Queen's Square where Sydney Fuller would battle it out against Anthony Sylvester Jr. But Fuller, ever the bridesmaid, backed out of the race at the very last minute and gave the endorsement to Sylvester.
In Caribbean Shores, Jose Coye was endorsed.
