...And one of them, it appears, is the fate of Narda Garcia, the deposed CEO of Social Security. She was terminated last week and now the Social Security Board of directors is seeking advice on whether she should leave with a golden handshake or a soul pound. Garcia, as has been reported still had 4 years left on her contract. But it's about more than that, Garcia also wants to clear her name. Today she issued a statement to the media, her first comment on the matter saying: "I must state how deeply I regret the way in which this whole matter has been handled. I absolutely reject the findings of the Senate Special Select Committee, and I have sought legal advice reference this matter."
It continues, "I have been placed in a very difficult position because any kind of resignation by me could be seen as accepting culpability. More specifically, I do not accept that there has been any negligence or recklessness or any form of wrongdoing on my part. And given the present circumstances I feel compelled to take this matter to the court and have instructed my legal advisors to commence proceedings."
When we spoke to her by phone, Garcia would not comment any further. What we have heard however is that her lawyers will seek judicial review of the findings of the report of the Senate Special Select Committee and a part of that could be that Garcia was never permitted to review or contest the findings of the special auditor Mark Hulse, even though she requested in writing to do so.
