Every "a.m." on Wave Radio's Fus Thing Da Mawnin and Krem's W-U-B, the stream of callers, text message senders, and e-mailers opposing the Universal guarantee seem to mount. And while many are going on record with their objection, one former politician has come up with an electoral device that he hopes will capture that spirit in a meaningful way. Derek Aikman has organized a referendum for tomorrow where registered voters will be able to go to voting sites across the country to say simply yes or no to the Universal $33 million debt. He says it doesn't matter what you vote, but that you vote.

Derek Aikman,
"We are executing in an official capacity, a referendum vote tomorrow. We are taking all steps to ensure that the election tomorrow is conducted on the same level and the same credibility of a real election.

You've got to have, your name must be on the voters' list, you must provide an ID, it doesn't have to be the actual voter registration ID, but any picture ID. There will be scrutinizers from both political parties to ensure that the proper procedure is adhered to. You will have to dip your fingers in the ink after you vote. There has to be reconciliation of ballots before and after and we will have an official results, hopefully sometime by midnight.

I know it is late in the day in a sense but at least the nation of Belize, the electorate, will be able to stand and say to the election representatives in the House, on both sides of the fence, that this is where we stand on this matter and it is in my mind a very legitimate recording of where we stand.

This is the closest we can command as a people, the closest we can command through the democratic process, it's the best vehicle through which the voters of this country can speak to the 31 people in the House of Representatives we feel."

Voting will go from 8:00 in the morning to 8:00 at night tomorrow at various sites across the country that will be announced on the radio tomorrow.
