On Friday Barrington Montero and 11 other employees at the Universal Health Services Hospital, now Belize Health Care Partners, were fired. Montero told us it was union busting because union officers were targeted for termination: himself as President of the TAM Worker’s Union as well as the union’s secretary and other officers.
But Dr. Venny, the hospital’s new owner, today told us it is not union busting. He says that as any new owner would do, the new team at the hospital is making changes. Dr. Venny says the old way wasn’t working and that is why UHS defaulted. Operations at the hospital will be streamlined and Dr. Venny says more services will be offered. But for this to happen, drastic changes need to be made and he says the hospital is in the process of doing that.
Meanwhile Barrington Montero and his fired colleagues are liasing with the National Trade Union Congress of Belize.
