The PUP in Dangriga has a new standard bearer after a hotly contested convention on Sunday. Five persons offered themselves as candidates, including a brother and sister!

At the end of polling, a political newcomer Dr. Louis Zabaneh was elected with 487 of the 1,193votes. Second place finisher was Erica Jong with 299 votes, almost three times what her brother Greg Ovado got with his 111 votes.

Zabaneh's victory over four Garifuna candidates is somewhat surprising in Dangriga, and Jong was thought to be a frontrunner, since she was the only PUP town councillor elected on a UDP slate in March. Dr. Zabaneh is well known as the former President of Galen University. He is also the son of southern agro-business magnate Eugene Zabaneh.
