Last week, we told you how Prime Minister Dean Barrow left the country to attend the 39th Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community, in Montego Bay, Jamaica. At the close of the meeting, the CARICOM Heads of Government issued a communique addressing the Belize-Guatemala territorial dispute.
They note with satisfaction that both Belize and Guatemala are following through with the Special Agreement to submit Guatemala's territorial dispute to the ICJ.
The Heads of Government expressed support for the crucial role that the Organization of American States is playing in trying to resolve the dispute peacefully. They are also calling on the international community to keep supporting the OAS Adjacency Zone office.
They are concerned that there has been no real developments in talks about a protocol for the peaceful and neighborly use of the Sarstoon River. They are urging the two countries to, quote, "reinvigorate their efforts to this end".
Their statement ends, quote, " [The] Heads of Government underscored their unwavering support for the sovereignty, territorial integrity and security of Belize." End quote.
