Last night, you heard former Attorney General Michael Peyrefitte point fingers at the unions for the delays in fully implementing the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC).
The unions say that this important good governance initiative was stalled by a lack of political will, and they present it as proof that the political mass parties don't really want to crack down on corruption in public life.
Well, the National Trade Union Congress of Belize has fired back at the former AG to say that he is attempting to mislead Belizeans.
They say they attended a single meeting with Peyrefitte back when he was AG, and he was trying to address the final country review report for UNCAC. The NTUCB says that in that meeting, Peyrefitte reported to them that he hadn't received the Final Country Review Report. They say that he also informed them he had been advised that no action should be taken until after receipt of that document.
And then, the NTCUB says, quote, "At no time did the AG make any request of the NTUCB for submissions regarding the passage of the legislation….NTUCB categorically refutes these allegations." End quote.
The NTUCB asserts that the former administration has demonstrated that they had no intention of implementing UNCAC.
And that's why they are viewing the former AG's allegations as quote, " disturbing and confrontational to the unions of Belize". End quote.
