Tonight the UDP is sounding a loud alarm against the Briceno Administration. They say that Government wants to increase taxes on motor vehicles and road permits, and they are demanding that GOB halt any such plans.
It comes out of a statement in last week's Cabinet Briefing, which says quote, "Cabinet gave its approval for the Ministry of Public Utilities, Energy and Logistics to conduct a review of the fees in the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic Order of 2003…" End quote.
The Opposition reads through the tea leaves t conclude that the Government wants to increase taxation in these areas.
In their statement, they say, quote "The UDP vehemently opposes any increase in taxes on Belizeans in any sector at this time, particularly in light of the already depressed state of the economy brought on by COVID-19, massive unemployment, Government's cut in salaries of public officers and teachers, and the oppressively high cost of fuel, food, and other commodities." End quote.
The Opposition is also demanding that instead of increasing taxes, the Briceno Government should restore the 10% salary removed from public officers, and teachers, and implement a few of their manifesto promises, such as the 5-dollar per hour minimum wage, the high cost of fuel, and the development of an equitable social assistance distribution program.
Their statement closes by saying, quote, "the UDP calls on the PUP Briceño administration to start fulfilling the sworn pledges in its "Plan Belize" manifesto…rather than taxing them to death." End quote.
