If you use regular fuel you need to buy gas tonight! That's because it's going up again. Reliable reports tell us that regular is going by 66 cents per gallon. Government says it was supposed to be 90 cents, but they decreased their tax take - hardly consolation for average folks and the transport and tourism industries whose operating costs continue to go up.
And on the subject of gas, last night, we showed you how Prime Minister John Briceño went into defence mode when we started asking questions about the government's fuel tax take, and the new fuel subsidies which his government has approved for cane farmers in Northern Belize.
The PM shut us down on those inquiries in Shipyard, Orange Walk, but today, he called to clarify his government's decisions on the fuel subsidies for farmers. Via telephone, he told us quote, "...The subsidy is based on gallons and not the dollar value. The Cane Farmers are still getting the 1.4 [million] gallons, as they did over the past years. The tax on diesel has been reduced by over $1.30 per gal… so the dollar value is reduced." END Quote.
