The minimum wage is currently at a dismal $3.30 per hour and for two decades, it has moved a cent, even though inflation is at an all time high. The government has promised to increase this to $5, and has already set up a minimum wage taskforce.

But earlier in the news, we told you that everyday food items were at an all time high, so the media asked the Minister of State in the Ministry of Human Development if $5 is enough.

Elvia Vega Samos, Minister of State, Ministry of Human Development
"It's very important, like you mentioned, since 2002 it has been at that wage but as a minister of state in the Ministry of Human Development, it is important that our people feel satisfied with the work they're doing and the payback that comes with it. And so yes in Plan Belize, we did mention that we want to raise the minimum wage and it's very important in our ministry, our people are our greater asset and we must look out for our people."

"We're trying our best with what we have here, and I agree with you it's not enough. But it's a start and we take things one day at a time and we try to do our best. That's what is important."
