And PM Briceno's appearance at the Dangriga celebrations were part of his southern tour. On Friday, he was in Toledo, speaking with the leaders of Punta Gorda Town and the surrounding villages.
And while he was in Dangriga, we asked him about the concerns he had heard from the residents.
John Briceno, Prime Minister
"What we did is that, I wanted to be able to take the opportunity to go out in the field. I've said before I was elected that I need to find time to go and listen to people and basically that's what I did. I met with the chairmen of the village councils and the alcaldes, there are about 60 of them. I listened to their concerns, their issues of obviously the road, how we could help them with agriculture, how we could help in trying to make things better in the area, the concerns with MLA, the concerns with land, vast majority of them are saying that they would want to be able to have access to their land because some of them have had land for a long time but now because of the court ruling, they feel that they can't move. So it is something that we feel we have to take a closer, or a harder look."
Courtney Menzies:
"And on today's tour, apart from the ceremony and whatnot, is there anything else you're doing here in Dangriga?"
John Briceno, Prime Minister
"Well, I'll go a visit some of our, like, Ms Silvia Flores and a few other people, just quickly, to see how they're doing, you know these are people who have served the community, they've served the country very well, and they been members of our party, so I want to give a quick visit to them before I try to eat some really delicious food before I can go home."
