But Leader of the Opposition, Shyne Barrow, would beg to differ. He believes that the LIU's method of crime fighting has failed, and it's due to the leadership of the minister. He says the PUP government is doing the very same things that they've long criticized the UDP administration for.
Shyne Barrow, Opposition Leader
"The Leadership Intervention Unit is failing under the leadership of Kareem Musa. It may be a noble idea, but depending on the leadership it is not working. We had our incarnation of such a body and the same minister criticized us, they said that we were paying off the gang members, we were just paying them to behave and it's not a real solution."
"I have no difficulty with helping people. The difference between the UDP and the PUP you used to have to work to collect that money. They used to do some type of programs of activity in the communities and so the leaders gather the gentlemen and ladies and this is the assignment and then you come and collect your money. That is not the case anymore."
"I'm not saying that the people are not in need. We know that the cost of living is exorbitant, its obscene and that's another reason why that motion for no confidence is valid, because it exacerbates circumstances when you have a people that don't have access to education, that are below the poverty line and we are now in a position where the middle class has been eroded. The working class are pushed below the poverty line and those that were already below the poverty line pushed into the abyss of destitution. So, how can you fix crime with your multisectoral effort when no one can afford to live. So what happens; the people that are impoverish some of them don't want to live. They already inherently for generations, learnt from the slave masters a lack of value for life and when you are so poor that you wake up, you don't know where you are going to get your next meal, then what value do you have for life and so we see the genocide continuing in the south side communities."
