As we told you yesterday, government has settled multiple lawsuits with the Ashcroft alliance and acquired the Port of Belize - all for a total of just under 200 million Belize dollars.

It's a big relief for the Christian Workers Union - which was in a state of consent and costly disputes with the Ashcroft ownership. Their leadership was also facing a lawsuit for interruption of business and that suit has dropped.

A release from the union today says it welcomes the settlement, but, quote, "remains focused on justice for the Stevedores, as well as for the PBL 35, who were unjustly terminated by the Port of Belize Ltd (PBL) on July 22, 2020."

The release adds, quote, "privatization has been a self-inflicted nightmare, with CWU Members suffering the greatest loss. Nationalization done improperly, without accountable and transparent negotiations with our Members, will be a devastating repeat."
