And the Leader of the Opposition also ranted about the sugar shortage situation that plagued the shelves of Belizean stores. Last week the UDP issued a release claiming that a bag of sugar was given the green light by Cabinet to be smuggled across the border. The release alleged it was BDF soldier at the illegal border point who got the call. But the ComPol said that couldn't be true since it's police officers that man those points.
He also added that the advertisement alleging that Minister Mai was somehow involved because he called for the release of an alleged smuggler was untrue since it was Williams himself who set him free after the police were unable to find evidence that the sugar the man had was going across the border.
Today the Leader of the Opposition said the ComPol was complicit in what the "Briceno Regime" allows.
Shyne Barrow, Leader of the Opposition
"You know, the the commissioner of police would do well to move with humility and try his best to stay out of matters pertaining to criticisms that the opposition is making and not try to be the defense attorney, I know he is an attorney for the John Briceno regime. This issue of sugar shortage is not something that is fabricated even the learned Minister of Agriculture Abelardo Mai conceded that in the House of Representatives while his solution is to raise the price on sugar while accepting that that still will not solve the problem. Well, you know, that is the PUP way, bloodsuckers, they care nothing about hard working day to day Belizeans."

"There are allegations that when the BDF, it was the BDF I believe that my colleague in the House mentioned. I don't believe he mention the police department. Let's say it was the police department, the BDF. We are talking about ministerial intervention, ministerial abuse. These are things that are being reported to us from the security forces. They are telling us that leader, you know, we are trying, we hold people and then they let them go."
"So at the end of the day, it is another example of the tone deaf, disconnected state of the Briceno regime. And while the commissioner of police should be an autonomous body, even though he is appointed by the Prime Minister, he's a part of the new regime, he might as well be CEO in the office of the prime minister for Security, because he is all in on the Briceno regime."
"I haven't had time, but the more he opens his mouth, I feel I am obligated to report him to the Public Service Commission and the Bureau of Standards. His behavior is unethical and the hubris with which he presents himself that he could say what he want and that he could do what he want and he could mix politics with his office is lawless."
