And the PSU is also looking closely at another emerging situation - this time it's the proposed transition of Belize Tax Services from a government department to a statutory body known as a "Semi-Autonomous Revenue Authority" - SARA, for short.
A meeting was held with the PSU and the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of the Public Service and the Belize Tax Services. Under the new body, staff would have to transition to the new body - but their years of service would count. They can also resign or retire and collect benefits or request a transfer within the Public Service), or Retire.
The PSU president has sent a note to union members saying that the Union was NEVER consulted. They say that certain staff would see the terms and conditions of their employment changed - and add that there will be a 59% increase in employees and possible tripling of salaries, wages and admin costs.
The union will be meeting to come up with a position on it.
