He's the Minister with responsibility for the Free Zones, and that has put Jose Mai in the crosshairs of a report from a Mexican Facebook news outfit called "Noticias De Impacto Zona Sur Quintana Roo". That site posted a story yesterday making wild allegations of criminal involvement against Mai. It's gotten a lot of traction in Belize where - shall we say - the expectation of probity in public life is not high.
But, tonight Mai is battling back with a self referencing release posted on his personal page. It says, quote, "The Minister…takes this opportunity to categorically and emphatically deny any and all such unfounded allegations, and to indicate that this is yet another clear attempt by fake news media conspiring with detractors and political agents of the opposition UDP, to tarnish the good name and reputation of…(the said) Minister.
The release threatens legal action and makes much of quoting laws.
In total - and this may be a record - the release makes 10 references to Jose Mai either as a third person reference, or to his grand title as the Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise of Belize - which appears once in every paragraph and twice in three paragraphs.
