The Belcan Bridge replacement project - it's going to be one of the most ambitious and complex civil engineering projects the city has ever seen - and on October 28th, the City Council invited bids which would have been opened tomorrow morning, November 14th.

But, something's afoot, because last night the city council sent a notice to all bidders saying that the bid opening will not be happening tomorrow and that it has been deferred until further notice.

It would have been the Council's first bridge project and that generated a huge controversy when it was alleged that the Lebanese firm they had contracted to supervise the project had stolen the design from a local engineer. For its part that firm has said it simply re-tooled the design to make it workable.

But, there was also disturbance in government circles, since the MIDH raised a public stink that the bridge project had been taken away from their ministry which has supervised every bridge project in Belize's modern history.

Reports tell 7News this pause in plans by city hall is step one of the project reverting to MIDH - which reportedly came out of a meeting between the Minister of MIDH, Julius Espat and the Prime Minister.
