And the UDP is also helping to keep the issue of Caye Caulker seafront property at the forefront. As Minister Andre Perez explained, the government received an offer on the plot of land and paused the construction of the new police station to consider it. However, residents have been protesting and now the village council is gathering petition signatures to trigger a referendum.
And today, UDP Senator Zetina echoed their concerns.
Gabriel Zetina, UDP Senator
"The construction project was halted, was stopped, so what was the next thing the minister Andre Perez admitted, he admitted there was an offer on the table and he had suggested negotiations. What did the Caye Caulker people and village wanted was honesty, transparency and not transparency after being caught. And you see now there is deflection. To me that is mind boggling especially since the residents were promised that they would have gotten basically a new building for the police department substation. Policing in the island is very important as one of the top tourist destinations. Secondly, it wasn't their land to start with. They transferred it under the pretense that their police substation would have gotten rehabilitated. How can you go about now negotiating? Mind you, the project was halted."
"The people of Caye Caulker, if they would have not stood together, took to the street, protest, you better believe PUP would have sold that land."
