There is a new Women’s Cross Country Champion and she is Shalini Zabaneh. 15 women started out from San Ignacio at 8:00 on Sunday morning and after 12 noon, Zabaneh rode across the finish line in front of the Memorial Park. Riding for Team Sagitun, Zabaneh finished the race just in front of her team-mate Renee Eastman. Lori Harkey was third. For first, Zabaneh gets $2,000 in cash plus a trophy. Her Sagitun team also won the vast majority of the 42 station prizes.
She finished in 4 hours and 4 minutes – that’s almost an hour slower than last year’s time by Mexican Brenda Aguallo. But Aguallo did not come to defend her title though she indicated her interest to the cycling association at the last minute.
