Back in April 2019, the dual nationality of Justin Williams, a 2-time Cross-Country Champion, became the subject of controversy. That's after the Cycling Federation of Belize pointed out that as far as the sport of cycling is he is considered to be a US Rider, even though he and his brother are Belizean Americans. They are US citizens born to Belizean parents in California.

The Federation pointed out that Justin Williams and his brother, Cory, were offered to be registered internationally as Belizean cyclists. They reportedly opted not to do so because of the opportunities that were available to them as US registered cyclists.

That caused a lot of bad feelings in the cycling and wider community - because it basically amounted to the renunciation of a two time champ. Well, tonight - all those bad feelings are behind us because the Cycling Federation of Belize is publicly announcing that Justin Williams is now registered as a Belizean cyclist.

Their press release from this evening says, quote, "We are honored to officially announce that Mr. Justin Williams has completed the process of nationality change with the relevant authorities namely the UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) and USA Cycling. Mr. Williams has obtained an international license issued by his membership federation USA Cycling with a Belizean Nationality. Mr. Williams is now eligible to compete in our National Championships and for selection to our National Team to represent Belize in international events." End quote.

He is expected to compete in the National - Belizeans only - Road Championship this Sunday. So, what's in it for him? Well, Justin can now use his Belize badge to try and participate in International games such as the olympics, and Pan Am games.

And while the reconciliation is reason for relief, it certainly suggests that technically, Justin has been riding illegally in Belize for all these years.
