Next, we move on to a weekend sporting event which the organizers say should be action-packed and enjoyable for all ages.
The Belize Boxing Development Council has organized 7 fights between fighters from Belize, Mexico, and Guatemala. The bouts will take place at the Mexico Center in Belize City tomorrow evening.
This evening, we stopped by to speak with one of the trainers who is working with the fighters who will take to the ring tomorrow. Here's what he had to say about why you should come out and support the event:
Assad Abdul Hakk Martines, Boxing Coach
"We are going to have a action-pack night. We are having 7 youth amateur bout - Guatemala against Belize and we were schedule for 4 professional fights, but the Belizean American Xavier August, he had some traveling document issues in California, but still yet we are having Mechanical Esquivel that people know. This is his 20th professional fight. He is 16:3 and then we are having co-main event, a dynamic, young woman from Mexico. Jessica Basulto, she is a former Mexican Olympian and a former Mexican national champion and she is also now a professional. She was difficult to find an opponent, because none of the young women in all the southern Mexico wanted to fight her, because she is undefeated."
"We are hoping that any sport enthusiast should come. Anyone who want to see quality sporting content should come. Anyone who loves combat sports should come. Anyone who has the desire to get involve to combat sports will allow them to see the reality of it."
Eduardo Esquivel, Belizean Boxer
"I do a lot of workouts in the game and run every morning and I feel ready for this fight."
The Boxing Development Council is made up of fight enthusiasts who believe that Belize's historical love of the sport is strong enough to revive it and make it a big ticket sporting event - as it was in the past.
