Tonight there is a flood alert for the south of the country and the Met office is urging everyone to keep a close watch on the weather because Belize could be facing heavy rainfall over the next few days.

This is due to a a low pressure system over inland Nicaragua that is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms.

I spoke to the Chief Met Officer earlier a short while ago about why you need to monitor this system:

Reporter
"Talk to us about the coming storm. We know that the weather this weekend is going to be wet in the worst way possible, but what should Belizeans be on the lookout?"

Ronald Gordon, Chief Meteorologist
"We have been monitoring a area of low pressure which is now a trough of low pressure that is currently over the north western Caribbean Sea, the system is moving towards us with a very low chance of becoming a tropical depression. The key point I want to make is that we are not expecting a tropical

depression or tropical storm to affect us. However, it is important to note that these systems even though its just a trough of low pressure as you may say can produce significant rainfall and we are expecting for there to be significant rainfall of about 1-2 inches or even higher over the weekend and that will continue even after the system has moved west of us, because for the next few days we will under a very moist pattern with moisture coming up from the Pacific area, so certainly we expect significant amount of rainfall and the potential for flooding."

Government has put out a Flood Advisory saying that the low-pressure system presents potential threats to the agriculture sector, particularly to some southern regions of Belize where there is a flood alert. The Ministry of Agriculture is advising all farmers in low-lying and flood-prone areas to safeguard their families and livelihoods as needed.

The National Hurricane Center warns, quote, "Some slow development of this system is possible before it moves inland over northern Central America and the Yucatan Peninsula tonight or on Saturday. Regardless of development, locally heavy rainfall is possible over Honduras, Belize, northern Guatemala, and southeastern Mexico through the weekend.
