While last week we showed you the public's reaction to the use of Social Security Board's money to finance private companies little more has been said by any organization on the use of your money for the cause of private individuals. That was until today when the Chamber of Commerce came out condemning the use of Social Security money to fund private entities.
The release by the Chamber states that the loans and guarantees made by Social Security were done so prior to the chamber's representation on the Social Security Board. It says that neither the Chamber's executive nor its representatives knew or approved such questionable transactions. The release goes on to ask for full and complete disclosure of information relating to investments and guarantees made to private companies and other bodies. It further asks that an audit be called for to ascertain the SSB's loans and investments portfolios to determine financial exposure. It's a strong calling and one that has the backing of the Belizean business community who for their employees are also contributors to the Social Security fund. It is now a wait and see situation to see government's reaction if any to the Chamber's requests.
