We are living in a wireless world run by cell phones and computers. Today Belize Telecommunications Limited's internet service said goodbye to wires with the launch of their internet Hotspot. It is a new service for tourists and other travelers on the go who need high speed internet access. The service was launched today at one of BTL's hotspots, the Great House Hotel.
Keith SwiftReporting,
This morning BTL's Senior Marketing Representative Lisa Stanford logged on to the 7NEWS website to check out the latest news. The difference here is that Stanford did it on the balcony of The Great House Hotel on her laptop and with no wires; there is no power cord and no phone line. It's not magic; Stanford is able to browse the web wirelessly because she is at the Great House, which is one of two Hotspots that BTL has set up.
Lisa Stanford, Senior Marketing Rep. BTL
"If they want to get on the internet whenever they could and with the Hotspot they won't need to stay in their hotel rooms and get internet access, they can go by the pool and get internet access; they can go by the restaurant and get internet access; so basically anywhere in this area they can get internet access."
It's simple all you need is a wireless card and Stanford says that once you power up your laptop and you open up your browser you will automatically get this sign-up screen. You will need to buy surfing time and the going rate is about $32 a day. The new service, only currently available at The Great House and at the airport, is being marketed to tourists and business travelers. BTL has already founded a satisfied customer in Jonathon Rotter. Rotter is here on business and has been surfing wirelessly on his laptop since yesterday.
Jonathon Rotter, Business Traveler
"I signed for the service and it works automatically. It affects my ability to be able to do work more efficiently and so its something that I've always thought about, for instance when I'm booking a hotel if I'll be able to access the internet through the hotel."
Keith Swift,
How reliable has it been since you started using it?
Jonathon Rotter,
"Its been very reliable, there' just one little thing that we're working on right now and it maybe a problem with my computer as opposed to the service, but I was able to get on immediately when I signed on and the internet was working very well and the email was working very well, and also as I mentioned earlier my instant messenger seems to work very well."
Hotspots can be accessed from a laptop, handheld computers, and other devices such as personal digital assistants.
