But while that's Mahler's chosen solution, it's a plan that right now is looking either far-fetched or far-off.
This morning we asked him about the CDC's level 3 rating for Belize and how it's affecting tourist arrivals just ahead of high season.
Hon. Anthony Mahler
"Some months ago, when I was in the house and I was explaining to the nation the growth and the re-emergence of tourism in Belize, I also caution that you should go out and get vaccinated. We have to continue to curb the numbers. We have to continue to control the numbers. Now we have a spike, but that has been happening all across the world and so travel internationally has gone down for the month of August, but still, we have major partners coming back at the end of this year, closer to November and December. Southwest is yet to come back, WestJet, we have Frontier. we have Alaska - all of those airlines will come in with additional capacity. So, I'm still optimistic about where we will be later on. Remember the experts were saying that tourism wouldn't rebound until 2-3 years. We are trending towards 75%-80% at the end of July, but with a spike like this with new measures in place, people tend to hold back from traveling and that a global phenomenon."
The Minister also commented on all the negativity he says he sees in the media, telling our cameras today that he dreads the subject matter on each and every Monday night newscast.
