And while the developments in the Cayo District may attract more visitors, San Pedro and Caye Caulker have seen a strong surge of tourists since the start of the year. And if it continues like this, the area rep says they may be able to break 2019's record - set when his predecessor was Minister.

"Have you seen an influx of tourists here on the island?"
Andre Perez, Area Rep, Belize Rural South
"Both Caye Caulker and San Pedro we're bursting at our seams. The Civil Aviation Department as well report, you know, the amount of flights are coming in."
"And this is where we're seeing also the issue with the Cessna Caravan aircrafts are coming in because 80% of those flights that transport passengers from the PGIA, they come to either to San Pedro Airship or to Caye Caulker."
"So that's huge. So imagine that you're mobilizing, you have 21 flights this weekend, 21 flights in one day. And you're mobilizing 80% of those passengers to Caye Caulker and San Pedro on a 14 passenger plane. Can you imagine that up and down? So that has to be a plan as well, long-term plan as well. But yes, we're very grateful that San Pedro and Caye Caulker are doing well as far as tourism. And by all means, which might exceed this year, will exceed 2019."
