They're accused of selling fake in-transit visas to 10 Central Americans, and today two immigration officers appeared in Benque Viejo Magistrate's Court charged with criminal offences.

Elias Martinez, 38 years old, and Addli Martinez, 24 years old have been charged for destruction of documents, attempted theft, and falsification of documents. Addli Martinez was additionally charged with two counts of extortion and two counts of theft. Both men received $5,000 bail and will re-appear on March 11th.

The charges arise from an incident, which happened last Wednesday when police who are assigned to monitor the border - spotted the group of 10 Salvadorans leaving the immigration station. When police questioned them - they claimed to have been forced to bribe the two officers to get in-transit visas to Mexico. Shortly after coming under suspicion, the officers disappeared and turned themselves in on Monday.

Of note is that 7 of the 10 Salvadorans have now been remanded to prison because their nationality documents were false.
