Government today announced the formation of a Football Sports Commission to "guide the national sports council in the further development of football in Belize." It's a sufficiently generalized general goal, but on closer reading, it sounds like a back-door attempt to supplant the Football Federation of Belize and its executive headed by Dr. Bertie Chimilio.

A government release lists the terms of reference for the commission as to guide the proper management and leadership of football locally, nationally, and internationally.

FFB's President Dr. Chimilio told us today that in his opinion this is yet another attempt by government to subvert his organization and leadership. But Chimilio, who last week got a vote of confidence from CONCACAF, says it won't work because FFB remains the only local organization that the world body of football - FIFA recognizes.

The release says the football sports commission will be comprised of local personalities experienced in the leadership and playing of football. None of the members have been named as yet.
