In Belize's legal fraternity Solicitor General Elson Kaseke is known as ‘wily’ and he proved that today by walking out of a U.S. Courtroom.
Kaseke is in Miami tonight after being arraigned in a Virginia courtroom this morning. 7NEWS has confirmed that Kaseke received bail and left the state immediately. He will overnight in Miami, and is expected to return to Belize tomorrow. Kaseke will not participate in the OAS conference which he flew to Washington on Sunday to attend.
Though there is no information coming from the Belize embassy in Washington which arranged representation from a local attorney, 7NEWS has learnt that he may not have to re-appear as the matter can be handled ex-parte and the Solicitor General would be expected to receive a fine of possibly less than a $1,000.
As we first reported (see Solicitor General Jailed in Washington), Kaseke was detained by federal authorities after he got into a misunderstanding with the flight crew in the first class area on a flight to Washington D.C. He remained in detention for 36 hours until his appearance in court this morning; we still have not clarified what charges he was arraigned on.
