It started as a domestic dispute between lovers of the past 18 years but that argument could end up costing construction worker Derrick Costly the use of his left hand.
The 47 year old says he was taking a bath after mid-day yesterday when he was viciously attacked with a machete by his stepson after a domestic dispute with the young man's mother. Costly received chop wounds to his left wrist and right elbow. He underwent surgery and is recovering at the KHMH. From his hospital bed Costly told us he never saw it coming.

“And this place is like three steps off the ground right and I was inside and he stood up by the door and asked me where are his mother’s things. I told him that between CIB and your mother and me we clarified that already and I don’t have anything for your mother. That was when he pushed me in the chest and grabbed two chains from me and tore my shirt. I tried to push him away through the door back but there was a machete on the floor where my landlord was chopping and I didn’t see that. So he picked up the machete and came back inside and gave me a an everlasting wound.”
Q: Do you think he meant to kill you?
Derrick Costly,
“Yes.”
Q: So what saved you? He only injured your hands right?
Derrick Costly,
“Well the room was small so after he chopped me the part of the building I managed to fight my way through the door which is when he gave the second chop.”
Q: Do you feel lucky to be alive?
Derrick Costly,
“Sure, sure.”
Costly's concern is about his hand which has only a 50-50 chance of being used again. Meanwhile, police have yet to detain his stepson.
