They might have imagined themselves as pirates of the low seas, but three marine outlaws didn't get far with their plan to steal another man's boat.
A fisherman of Tibruce Street reported to police that yesterday morning at around 10:30, he went to check on his 17 foot fiberglass skiff with a 40 horse power engine at the Haulover Creek area, but when he got there, he saw his boat being towed away by another boat with six men on board. He shouted at the men, but ran off when one of them pulled out a shotgun and aimed it at him. Quick response by the police led to the recovery of the boat, the engine and a 12 gauge pump action shotgun with 16 live rounds.
Police have since arrested 34-year-old Denton Bernard, 26-year-old Hopeton Westby, and 47 year old Brian Clare and charged them with keeping an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, theft and aggravated assault.
