7NEWS has received reliable reports which say that two police officers were charged this evening for the carnal knowledge of a 14 year old girl whose family first came forward with her story on 7NEWS.
Two weeks ago, her family came to us because they felt their complaints had been ignored by police. The family claims that the girl, now 15, is three months pregnant. They further claim that the father of the unborn child is a police officer, one of three policemen she was involved with.
Their public complaint rocked the department and since they first came on the news, police have been moving decisively to make arrests. The family informed us this evening that the police claim the officers will go to court tomorrow. The family was given that assurance after they went to the police station today to ask that the charge be dropped.
The reason they wanted to drop it is because they feel their life is under threat by the same officers who were involved. Proof of a clear and present danger to them were driven home with chilling clarity this weekend when the home and the car of the sister of the pregnant child were shot up. Though we can't release her name, the sister is the same one who came forward to speak on 7NEWS.
She says that on Saturday night, one of the officers under question called her to discuss the complaint. She says she had been drinking and didn't follow up on it. But at 2:00 am, she woke up, very sober, to the sound of gunshots ringing in her ear. A man reportedly on a bicycle opened fire on the house and her car. Today she showed us the shattered window of the car, the bullet hole in the side of the car, and the shot that crashed through her bedroom window, right above where she and her husband were sleeping.
The family was terrified by the shooting and when we spoke to them they were convinced that the shooter had been sent by the police who now stand accused. Fearing for their safety, they requested not to appear on the news.
