Tonight a 16 year old is recovering from a massive head injury at the KHMH. Alex Humes is a student of Belmopan Comprehensive High School and a week ago, he was in a fight with a fourth former who is 19 years old. The fight was over a chair and it ended when the 19 year old struck him over his head with a metal pipe. That took it from a beef between school boys to a life threatening injury. Alex Humes brain started to bleed, and it was a critical medical situation. He's normalized now, but Alfonso Noble visited with him to find out how this could have happened.
Alfonso Noble Reporting,
16-year-old Alex Humes is at the KHMH receiving treatment for a head injury he sustained at the hands of a fellow classmate from the Belmopan Comprehensive High School. Humes says it started off as a simple argument and ended with a life threatening injury.
Alex Humes Jr., Student
"One of my classmates stoned the boy with a piece of coconut and he thought it was me but it wasn't me. And then he came and started to point in my face and shoved me but I just went back inside. And then he came back inside, he came and started to twist my hand and then my classmates came and we were talking about the argument and I lashed him and I lashed him in the side of his head with a piece of board, like this.
I was going home and then I see he came with a big piece of iron rod and then he and another guy came and he started to talk about this is the time when he will lash me now because this is time for him to shine and thing like that. I told him to leave me alone and let me go home because I didn't want any trouble and it was him who started it. And the other boy told him to just beat me up and leave me and let me go home. But he said that he wanted to lash me bad and I told him to just leave me alone, lash me if you are going to lash me so I can go home one time. But he still went and he lashed me."
Alex went home and his father says he began with complications resulting from the injuries. His family had to rush him to the hospital.
Alex Humes Sr., Father
"We took him to the hospital and the doctor recommended a CAT scan which we went through on Friday and then he had another CAT scan yesterday which revealed that his brain was bleeding on both the left and the right side."
And now this parent is at a loss as to why his son who he describes as a humble person is in this predicament.
Alex Humes Sr.,
"Everybody knows Alex and Alex is a humble little person. Not because he is my son, I am telling you. He is a humble guy and he doesn't get into trouble."
Now both Alex and his father are hoping that action will be taken against the 19year old who landed this 16 year old in hospital for a week.
Alex Humes Sr.,
"I would expect that the school would definitely take some sort of action because I understand that the young fellow who did this to my son has a previous expulsion, he was expelled already. So I would expect that at least he would be expelled by now.
It is a serious head injury and I am prepared to let the law take its course. I personally will forgive Efendi for doing the thing but for every action there are consequences so the law must take its course."
Alex Humes Jr.,
"I want to get a report from this man because he could have damaged me bad because right now this is two weeks that I am out of school. March the 15th we should have had diploma exams and that is messing me up bad."
Thankfully for Humes it's not and doctors hope to have him released from the KHMH tomorrow.
Police say they are investigating but as far as we could find out, no charges have been brought.
