And in late breaking news, 7NEWS has been informed that the new owners of Universal Health Services have fired 12 workers and its news because they say its union busting. Those who have been terminated include the President and the Secretary of the hospital’s union. We spoke to President of the Union Barrington Montero who got fired this evening.
Barrington Montero, Union President
“At about four o’clock I was called on my cellular phone about the Human Resources Manager wanting to see me at the office. When I went there she had a letter saying that, this letter serves as my termination. But what I want to say is that I am the President of the TAP Worker’s Union which represents all the staff workers who work at the former UHS and now the Belize Health Care Partners. This is clearly showing that these people that came in, came in with one mind to get rid of the union that represents the workers at Belize Health Care Partners.”
Keith Swift,
How many workers were fired?
Barrington Montero,
“Let us say about twelve workers, some at the senior management and many at the normal level.”
Keith Swift,
So you got the letter, you are fired, what are you going to do?
Barrington Montero,
“We already talked to National Trade Union Congress of Belize and they are saying that we should meet with them so that we could take further because this is a clear indication that people are here for union busting.”
Due to the late breaking nature of the story, we were unable to get comment from Universal.
