No one has been charged for the grenade explosion in Mayflower Street on Sunday night but police have one man detained, and are asking for your help in finding another. And to get that help, the CIB office has gotten the ok from headquarters to take the unusual step of releasing the name and picture of the teenager wanted for questioning, even though he is a minor. Superintendent Aaron Guzman, the officer in charge of the CIB Office told us why they have released the picture of the 16 year old.

Supt. Aaron Guzman, Officer in Command of CIB
“Since yesterday as you may well be aware, we had detained, we have in our custody a young man Kareem Smith, also known as Flash. He is being detained in relation to the grenade that was thrown and exploded on Sunday night. I would like to now share with you that we are looking for Akeem Smith, that’s the brother of Kareem. He is a person of interest in relation to this investigation and we would hope to get the public’s assistance.”

Jules Vasquez,
Is this unusual measure an indication of how seriously you are taking this investigation?

Supt. Aaron Guzman,
“Well as you know this is a matter of national interest and importance and so after the Commissioner had some consultation, he just got into the country, he decided that in the best interest of our security as a nation, we should release this photograph and try to get this young man into custody and let him answer certain questions.”

Akeem Smith is from the Saint Martin’s area. And today in the Mayflower Street area, or Bailar as it is known, they had an unusual guest. He is Youth Minister Marcel Cardona who was visiting city hotspots with Youth for the Future. Though he seemed a bit out of place, the Orange Walk East Representative spoke cordially with a cross section of area residents, including some of the young men injured in the grenade blast.
