42 year old Winfield Mortis who had 2 convictions for theft, got his third one today in court when he pleaded guilty to the theft of quarter tank of gasoline from a Ford Explorer belonging to Ronald Young. Magistrate Dorothy Flowers sentenced him to a year in prison along with another 13 months for default of payments of fines amounting to 1,500 dollars on a charge of theft and handling stolen goods. The sentence is to run consecutively with the year he was already sentenced to.
The theft occurred around 3:30 am on July 9th in Ladyville, but he was not detained until the 17th. Young reported to police that he looked out the window of his home and saw Mortis taking gasoline from his vehicle. By the time the police arrived, Mortis was long gone, but they later arrested him at his home down the street.
