For months now we’ve been following the story of 22 year old Keith Moguel. Both of his kidneys have collapsed and as we showed you two weeks ago- he underwent surgery so he could receive peritoneal dialysis. Edmund Wright, Belize’s Honorary Consul to Louisiana saw the stories and he along with a newly formed NGO – the Belizean American Association of New Orleans have decided to help. On Friday they donated $3,600 to the Kidney Association. The donation will only cover a month’s work of medicine for Keith and two other patients but according to Edmund Wright- it is a start.
Harold Ray,
“We don’t want to sit back and reminisce and talk about how nice a little country it is or whatever, we want to be a part of a catalyst and make some positive changes and making some positive work here in Belize itself.”
Edmund Wright, President
“We came down here because we saw the story initially that you started on the dialysis, the renal failure in Belize. We saw it, we discussed it, and then we saw the story on Keith, in fact we’ve been following up the story and we decided, our organization decided that we would come down here and see what we can we do.
Like I said earlier this is a new organization, six months old, and currently we have four members and there are four guys on this organization and we have big hearts. We are in the process of filing for what we call a 501c. With the 501c, the Colonel, he is a retired colonel from the US Airforce, he will be able to formulate different letters that we could send to companies that will be able to provide us with resources and then we can challenge it to Belize. So it is a process but like I said we have a big heart and then we will do the right thing and as soon as a resources start flowing then our goal is that everything that generate in the US must come to Belize.”
Some good news is that a funding source has been located to fund Keith Moguel’s transplant surgery. He still needs $5,000 to test if either his mother or brother – both of whom have volunteered to donate their kidney will be compatible.
