Gunshots rang out near the Bel China Bridge in Belize City this afternoon when police shot a young man who was running from them. Inexplicably, a senior Police officer on the scene refused to share any information on what he said was a straightforward event. But here’s what we’ve been able to piece together. Around three this afternoon, the gang unit searched a suspicious black car on North Front Street near the approach to Bel China Bridge. Three men were in the car and one of them ran. A Police officer set chase and caught up to him near the Yalbac Lumber Yard. The officer told the young man to freeze. Instead he reached for a firearm and that’s when the officer shot him in the leg. He then threw a Taurus brand 9 mm pistol which was recovered with 8 live rounds.
He was taken to the KHMH and identified as 20 year old Akeem Lord is under police guard pending charges of aggravated assault and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. Police searched the vehicle and found 11.4 gramms of cannabis for which all occupants will be jointly charged. The two others who were in the car are Ernest Young and Anthony Mejia.
