There is a story coming out of Chetumal media, which says that a Belizean coast guard vessel overturned in the Bay of Chetumal on Saturday afternoon at 1:00.
According to the report, the vessel was pursuing a pair of cross-border smugglers in twelve foot canoes. They captured them and their cargo - which included 64 ounce bottles of COLA. But then due to rough conditions and a heavy payload, the Coast Guard vessel reportedly hit a wave and capsized. With that, the report says four Coast Guard officers were flung to the sea along with the smugglers.
They were rescued by a passing Belize water taxi - and then the Mexican Coast Guard came along and assisted in towing the vessels back to San Pedro.
Again, it is only a report in a Mexican newspaper, and despite best efforts, we could not get comment form the Belize Coast Guard, the Ministry Spokesperson or the CEO.
