And while we wait to see if Krichelich will ever be put on remand, we raised the situation to his country's senior-most representative in Belize, Charge' D Affaires Keith Gilges.

Gilges couldn't comment on this specific case but he did say that justice systems both in Belize and in the U.S. have a long way to go:

Keith Giles - Charge D'Affaires "Clearly it is in my interest and in the interest of the Embassy that the Americans that come down here abide by the laws of Belize, that's imperative. We are visitors in this country, and we need to behave appropriately. When it comes to how the Belize justice system treats people, the idea it is the rule of law and the law applies to everyone. So that's what I would expect of Belizean law and we are working on programs to ensure to help Belize improve its justice system, improve the processing of cases, all those different things, we want to be a cooperative partner on that. Is there some ways to go? Sure, there are things about the justice system here that could be improved, absolutely. I would there are awful lot of things in the justice system in the United States that can be improved, we are all striving to be better."
