Tonight, 20-year-old Chervin Tench, a resident of Flamboyant Street, is at home after spending 8 months on remand at the Belize Central Prison. He was charged with last year's murder of the 37-year-old Taximan, Erwin Castillo, but the DPP's Office has decided to withdraw that charge against him.
When his case was called up for adjournment today before the Magistrate's Court, the police prosecutor informed the magistrate that the Director of Public Prosecutions had issued a directive. Those instructions were to withdraw the murder charge due to want of prosecution.
So, the Magistrate informed Tench of this outcome in his favor, and she told him that he was free to leave. Tench, who was dressed in a shirt to remember his deceased brother, Dwayne Cherrington, then left the court, and he was quickly rushed into an awaiting vehicle by his family members.
On November 27th, 2020, Erwin Castillo was driving his vehicle on Flamboyant Street. He reportedly was heading toward Western Avenue when 2 people stopped him and started to talk to him. Shortly after that, he was approached by a gunman who fired several gunshots and killed him.
Several days before Castillo's fatal shooting, Chervin Tench's brother, Dwayne Cherrington, was also gunned down and killed. He had to attend his brother's funeral in handcuffs and with a police escort.
