At 3:00 am on Saturday morning, 37-year-old Arilee Young was at home on 4th street, awake with insomnia, while her daughter slept on the couch in their living room.

Her common-law husband - a security guard - unexpectedly returned home, which was strange since he was supposed to be working.

She opened the door to let him in, and shortly after, he killed her and her daughter before turning the gun on himself.

The explosive and wholly unforeseen act of violence, especially coming from a couple with no apparent history of abuse - has destroyed the families.

Tonight, her family still can't comprehend how the lives of a hard working police officer and a sixth form student could have ended so brutally, and so swiftly.

Courtney Menzies visited the home today where the family, who travelled from Cayo, were staying. Here is her story.

The usual quiet of the pre-dawn hours in Kings Park was interrupted by the sound of four gunshots. Three bodies lay dead in a house on 4th Street from 3am until police arrived on scene around 7:00. And in those four hours, the family of 37-year-old Arilee Young could never have guessed what had happened.

Her common-law husband, 26-year-old Glenford Perriot, had left work during his nightshift to come home and shoot her and her 17-year-old daughter, Sherane Cardenas, before killing himself.

Young's body was found near the door, her daughter where she slept on the couch, and Perriot in a chair beside the refrigerator.

On Thursday Young told her mother of her plans to sit the exam to move up the ranks to a police corporal. The last text she sent to her mother was twenty minutes before she died.

Ornelda Gordon, Mother of Deceased
"The last time she texted me and said mom are you asleep. We chat at night, big two/three, we chat, so when I see her text I said let me see what she wanted. It's not strange that she texted me at that time."

Courtney Menzies:
"2:38 was about 20 minutes or so before she was shot. And she didn't sound alarmed in her text?"

Ornelda Gordon, Mother of Deceased
"No she just said mom are you sleeping."

And she had no reason to be suspicious since the family believed that Perriot was never abusive towards Young or her daughter. Her sister said that it was a complete shock to learn he had killed them.

Tanesha Young, Sister of Deceased

"She could go anywhere with me, he didn't bother. So I told her Arilee, I happy for you. I happy you found somebody who loved you back, you deserved it."

Courtney Menzies:
"So you never expected him to turn on her like this?"

Tanesha Young, Sister of Deceased
"Never, he doesn't yell at my sister, not around us, I asked her if he go one simple, and she said no. All couple have their up and down, even me. But he won't knock her."

And perhaps another reason they felt they didn't need to worry was because of Young's independence. She relied on herself, working hard to provide for her two daughters. And she made sure she spoiled them with everything she never had.

Tanesha Young, Sister of Deceased
"She was determined to have a future, when she didn't have a job in the police, she used to work three or four jobs in San Pedro so she could give them what they want, she could buy a land, everything, she save, she's a person who likes to save. And when she got everything, she took her kids to Playa, they were planning to go to the states right here. Anything that they wanted, they get, they rent here right now, but they have two three house, they have their own land, that's the kind of person she is. She work hard for it, really hard, for them to just take it away just like that."

And hard work was a lesson that Young taught her teenage daughter, who was on her way to becoming a judge.

Tanesha Young, Sister of Deceased
"She's smart, big summer and she would be studying. She was right, her books were there, her laptop, her TV was there, watch the TV, in her work, studying. She always studying because her ma loves A's. And anything she want, if want a phone that costs 3 grand or this cost 5 grand, [her mother] will buy it because she loves A's."

"She was so smart, want to be a judge, [Arilee] had plans. If she do good here, when they go, she would make them transfer and she would go with them. When her daughter would study, she was going, that's how much she loved her daughter. She didn't even want her daughter to go abroad to study by herself."

And Young's sister grappled with why Perriot would leave his shift just to kill them.

Tanesha Young, Sister of Deceased
"I can't, you feel like your heart just get destroyed, like 90% of you just gone. You have to find out how you will get that back. How I will find-I have to get her back. It's so hard, why didn't you take your time to breathe, you were already at work, why did you have to come back? Why didn't you come in the morning? I don't know what happened, why he snapped."

Their mother questioned if they had failed to notice the signs of mental illness with Perriot.

Ornelda Gordon, Mother of Deceased
"Most of the time when we were having family activities we would have to pull him in. the rest of the son in laws would come in and talk and everybody have fun, we would have to tell him come bwai, Glen come, you noh want do this or that. Because he would be by himself just watching. So I said maybe he needed help and we failed him."

And another question she asks herself is what would have happened if Young had gotten the vacation leave she had begged for.

Ornelda Gordon, Mother of Deceased
"She didn't get her vacation, she applied for her day, she didn't get her day, and I told her just take three days off and come, spend the Friday with us. She said ma I done apply for the day and they didn't give me. If I take sick leave, they'll say I'm not really sick, I just want that day. She into her job, and she said she's not going to do that. That was her destiny."

Courtney Menzies:
"And do you believe if she had gotten the day off and visited you in Cayo, she would be alive today?"

Ornelda Gordon, Mother of Deceased
"She would be alive because the young man wouldn't have been at work because he was off the Friday, he applied for the Friday off from his work so that we could go up to my house."

But, like Young's father said, they have forgiven Perriot, even putting a candle for him in their memorial. Young's and Cardenas' candles were the only ones lit, with their favorite drinks behind them and photos of happier times. Now, they're leaving the rest of God.

Courtney Menzies:
"What were your feelings towards Mr. Perriot?"

Gilbert Young, Father of Deceased
"I will ask God to forgive him what he did, because what can we do. We left in God's hands, but we will always forgive him, even though she is my daughter."

After graduating from San Pedro High School last year, Cardenas was about to go into her second year of studying Criminal Justice at sixth form. Meanwhile her mother had her sights set on moving upwards in the police department.

Young's other daughter will be 10 years old in October.
