Our news team went looking for answers today in Lord Bank, and Daniel Ortiz has that story:

In a few days, Lord's Bank Resident Joyce Underwood will celebrate her 81st birthday. But, instead of preparing for that milestone, she will have to focus on funeral preparations for her eldest son, 49-year-old Evan Mitchel.

Joyce Underwood - Mother of Deceased
"My birthday will be on the 13th of February, Sunday."

Reporter
"And he was part of the planning of the celebration?"

Joyce Underwood
"He is everything. You hear me, everything?"

Mitchell was fatally stabbed last Friday night. Police have since detained one suspect. This mai suspect is allegedly the person who waylaid and fatally injured him with an edged tool. He was allegedly in the vicinity of Brother's Store, here in the village.

ASP Fitzroy Yearwood - Communication, Belize Police Department
"Our initial investigation so far has revealed that Mitchell was walking in the company of a female believed to be his relative, and this female's common-law husband came out of the bushes. There was an exchange of words between and the victim, Evan Mitchell, and a fight ensued, where he took an object and stabbed Mitchell somewhere in the head area."

Joyce Underwood
"I heard that he was going to buy Boledo, and the boy dodged him in the dark and stabbed him in the head."

ASP Fitzroy Yearwood
"We know that he was transported to the KHMH, where he succumbed to his injuries on Saturday in the a.m."

We do have the assailant detained, and we know what charges will be levied on him sometime in the near future, hopefully, today.

Mitchell's mother says that he confronted his attacker because that person assaulted his girlfriend.

Joyce Underwood
"The only thing [is] that the girl that my son lives with says that she was out there by the guy's house, and the boy hit her in the stomach with a pint [bottle]. Evan went and asked him why he did that because he doesn't hit her. And I think that's what caused it, this dispute."

The family of the deceased is demanding that investigators bring a strong case against their main suspect. His mother insists that he was a quiet and peaceful man.

Joyce Underwood
"They took my son's life just - I don't know for grudge or what. All he does, when he drinks, he talks a lot, but he doesn't mean anything. He loves everybody. He has 2 kids. All I want is justice for my son because if he was a bad person, I'd let you know right here, he is a bad boy, that's why things happened to him. But, he is not like that."

"My son doesn't take edge tools anytime. I don't allow them with those types of things. I didn't grow them up like that. I raised them by myself without a father, 5 of them."

Mitchell's mother tells us that his only notable run-in with police was one time in the past when he was a suspect in a murder investigation. He was later released without any charges, and she told us that she kept on advising him to socialize at home only.

Reports to 7News are that Mitchell and this attacker do have some history. Mitchell's girlfriend was once romantically involved with the man who stabbed him. Police insist that at this time, they are treating the case as a "death investigation" until otherwise advised by the DPP's Office.
