You may remember back in July 2020 when DPP Cheryl-Lynn Vidal successfully appealed the acquittal of Calaney Flowers.

DPP Vidal was convinced that there was a miscarriage of justice when the retired judge, Justice Troadio John Gonzalez, acquitted her of the charges of murder and attempted murder. Police investigators brought those charges against her in 2012. That's because they believed she was criminally liable for the death of her baby's father, 29-year-old Lyndon Morrisson, and the severe injuries suffered by Sochyl Sosa, who was Morrison's new girlfriend at the time.

Morrison and Sosa were traveling on Freetown Road in Belize City on his motorcycle on the night of August 28th, 2012. They were passing in front of Central Assembly of God Church when Flowers knocked them both down with her car. Both victims were launched off the motorcycle and suffered severe head and bodily injuries. Sosa managed to survive, but Lyndon Morrison died.

The prosecution led evidence against her that she intentionally ran into the back of the motorcycle and caused the deadly accident. But, after listening to the case, Justice Gonzalez found her not guilty. However, the DPP wasn't satisfied with that outcome, and she appealed it in both the Court of Appeal and the Caribbean Court of Justice when the case's verdict and outcome were finally overturned.

The highest court in the land sent the case back to the Court of Appeal, and after a panel of judges from that court reviewed the case, they ordered Flowers to face a retrial.

Their written judgment says, quote, 'In conclusion, we reiterate that the trial judge erred in law by failing to consider whether the respondent possessed an intention sufficient to support the alternative offense of manslaughter This was a material error that led to a miscarriage of justice..The appeal is allowed, the verdict of acquittal set aside, and a retrial ordered." End quote.

That means Flowers will have to stand trial in the Supreme Court for these offenses again. But, the question is, where is Calaney Flowers today? And will she ever be found to be tried for murder again? That is unclear since she is believed to have left the country.
