While Peyrefitte wanted customs to go ahead and search Myvett, so did his commissioner of police at the time, Chester Williams. When we caught up with the Compol today he didn't want to say more about his exchanges with Griffith.

Now even though the commissioner previously said that customs had already searched the vehicle back in 2019 - that never happened - and that's because Griffith says Williams did not want to urge Myvett to take the vehicle into customs.

Today the commissioner said he would rather not talk about it.

Reporter:
"Rumor is customs controller Griffith has said he asked you three times to get Myvette to bring in the suspected stolen Seat Ibiza to customs, and he says you didn't do it, but told him to get a search warrant. Your account?"

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

"May I say that I am not going to go into a back and forth over that matter? I believe I've made myself extremely clear and I've also heard what you say, Mr. Griffith has said to you, I have the utmost respect for Mr. Griffith, and I'm sure that he do for me likewise. And I would leave it at that."

Reporter:
"Did it concern you then, or now that there is a handling of apparent stolen goods by a police officer."

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"I will not venture to say that you could be a person who purchased a vehicle from somebody believing that it is legitimate, but in fact it's not. Until that is proven, then we cannot say so."

Reporter:
"This was the former head of national crimes investigation at the time. Did you not see this as a priority that if he is handling or connected to any stolen goods, that it be urgently resolved one way or another?"

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"As I said to you, I believe I give the proper advice to the then control of customs, and I leave it at that."
