While you may have noticed a decrease in the number of murders being reported, the number of fatalities due to road traffic incidents are increasing.

In response, the ComPol is working on creating a road safety police unit, which will not only look at vehicular accidents, but also other crimes occurring in villages across the country. He told us more today.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

"We recognize that we are having a number of crimes in rural Belize, not just Belize District but across the country in the rural areas and so I have tasked commander of operations to see if he can put together a road policing unit within the MIT and it is going to be a 15 man team and they will responsible to go all over the country to deal with matters pertinent to road safety, as well as looking at human trafficking, human smuggling, firearms and drug trafficking and they will also be going into the respective villages, major villages like we see Bella Vista down south, too much happening there so we need to look at those large villages to see what we can do from a road policing standpoint to minimize crimes in those areas."
