Former Belize City Mayor, Zenaida Moya is recovering after she was physically assaulted in her own home by her employee. 28-year-old Corliss McKenzie had been Moya's caretaker for the past month, but last Thursday, he attacked and stole from her.
Moya told us she was working in her living room when they got into an argument and he pepper sprayed her. During the assault, McKenzie grabbed a bread knife, pressed it to her neck, and threatened her life. He also damaged two cell phones by throwing them on the floor and took $400 out of her wallet.
In court yesterday, McKenzie appeared unrepresented before a senior magistrate, where he was read six charges: one count of wounding, one count of aggravated assault with a pepper spray, two counts of damage to property, one count of threat of death, and one count of theft.
McKenzie pleaded not guilty and was offered bail of $2,500 plus one surety of the same amount, which he met.
He is due back in court on May 14th.
Moya explained that she has since dropped the charge of theft since her housekeeper recovered the money in the house.
