Something is rotten at the Solid Waste Management Authority- and it's not just the garbage.
The news broke yesterday - in the most unusual way - not through some salacious leak - but in a staid press release from the The Ministry of Sustainable Development.
The release said "The Ministry...is in the process of investigating an alleged wrongdoing at the Belize Solid Waste Management Authority."
The police have been called in - but the release doesn't say much more suggesting that to say more about the loss of taxpayer dollars might, quote, "negatively impact the investigation."
The Prime Minister held to that inscrutable position when he was interviewed today in Orange Walk:

John Briceno, Prime Minister
"Supposedly there seems to be some unaccounted funds, moneys that quite likely have been mismanaged. I want basically to tell you that we're doing a thorough investigations and that any information that's found out and any wrongdoing that we find. We're going to have the police involved with this, I think the police is already involved. And if there's any wrongdoing, we're going to ensure that these people see their day in court and to be able to account to the Belizean people."
Reporter: "I know you can't give details, but can you say if the director of the management authority is on administrative leave during investigation?"
John Briceno, Prime Minister
"I'm not sure if it's she's on administrative leave at this point, but I did know that she was asked to take a few days off, but umm, probably, if it is merited. Um probably already done. I've not been informed, but certainly if they need to put her on administrative leave. If it's not been done yet, it'll be it will be done."
We'll keep following the story.
