The city's gun violence continued this morning around 10:00 when 30 year old Andre Kerr was shot on Faber's Road. Kerr was driving his vehicle, slowing down near the speed bump in front of Grace Primary School, when a gunman on motorcycle passed by and let loose a barrage of bullets.
Kerr survived and no one else was injured, but with a school full of summer school kids a few feet away, the incident caused a major scare in the community. Courtney Menzies was on the scene this morning and has this story.
This police tape in front of Grace Primary School is the result of an attempted murder in broad daylight. 30 year old Andre Kerr was inside this vehicle when a motorcycle pulled up with a high powered weapon and began firing shots through the window. Kerr was hit in the face and crashed into the back of this city bus, but somehow survived the attempt on his life.
In the wake of the shooting, over 20 shell casings were found on the street. The students attending summer school were let out early - forcing parents to leave work to retrieve their children.
One grandfather said he heard the shots shortly after dropping his granddaughter off.

"This morning, I came and I brought my granddaughter to school and on my way back as I went over there by the store, I heard an amount of shots like a machine gun and when I looked back, I saw this brown car run underneath that bus so immediately I spun around and I came back and when I came here, two or three guys are here full of blood."

"Inside the vehicle?"

"Inside the vehicle, yeah. And a motorcycle took off down Faber's Road with speed. I guess that was the gunman, I don't know these fellas or the guy that got shot or anything but it's kinda scary to know we have our kids coming to our school and something like this happen, man, these guys have to hold it down."
He continued to lament the danger of the situation - almost 2 dozens bullets a few feet away from the standard 4, 5, and 6 students. Now, he's unsure if his granddaughter should return for her summer classes.

"When I heard the shots and I spun around and I saw the car run under the bus, I already knew that my granddaughter was already in class but yet still I came back to see what happened because bullets don't have any names and they could be flying all around and that kind of gun that these guys shooting, man, I worried about my granddaughter, immediately I came back to see what was going on."
"This really upsets me because this area here, these are a lot of kids and these guys have to watch what they're doing. Anybody could have been in this crossfire here, it's just a random shooting and a lot of shots, look how much shells on the ground that the police are looking at."
"I know it affects them because a couple of them were in the yard and I saw everybody scattering when the shots went off, this is a bad thing for a school area, very bad thing."
"We're going to watch what happens tomorrow because this is only a summer school and for these kids to be out here in this kind of danger, I think we need more policing in this Faber's Road area, that's the thing I think we need the most in this area."
And while he says there needs to be more police patrols, he added that part of the problem is the parents of the young men that commit these crimes.

"There are always shootings in this area but never with this magnitude of guns, we never heard any machine guns whispering in the streets like this, this is a strange one for today."
"It's overwhelming. I think lack of parenting is one of the biggest issues in this country because if you can see it's only the youths that are committing these crimes. You don't see anybody over 30 years, 40 years shooting these guns. All youths and I guess the youths of today get away from their parents."
